Writing Cell values from Reports to Internal Variables

Dear Support,
I am trying to write some cell values from a Report to Internal Variables, but it seems like not happening. I am using the below function:
= variablerw('variablename', 'value', 'read')
I have tried by writing 'write' instead of 'read', but still the same results.
I can read the variable values in cells, but writing an archive value from a cell to variables is not happening.
