Syntax for referencing values

I know it is possible to reference variable in a combined element using special syntax such
as %L to reference the description and %N0,3 will display the variable name starting at position 0 excluding the last three positions such that TIC103.pv would display TIC103.
This is a very nice feature! Where can I find a complete reference to this syntax?
Also I know that alarm text in reaction matrices can also reference values at runtime.
Where can I find the complete syntax for these references?
