Archive SE seems very limited

Archive SE seems very limited

Hi there,
I have a license for Archive Server SE.
I've added (some test) variables to the archive. I start the runtime and change the variables. I do end up with masses of .ARX files but what the heck can I do with them! I really want to be able to load the data into an external program (SQL Server, maybe), so I would happy to have the data in plain text. I thought export may do the trick but it's greyed out!
So, to sum up - can I use archiving (at my current license level) to save data in a useable way?
